The Internet and Public Relations: Primary uses by PR Professionals

  • Email distribution.  To individuals and staff members; transmission of news releases, photos, and pinch letters to media offices; and dispatch and receipt of copy between public relations firms and clients.
  • Websites.
  • Blogs, Moblogs, and Vlogs.
  • RSS- Really Simple Syndication.
  • Podcasting.
  • Brochureware.

Problems with internet:

  1. Biased Search Engine Results: Increasingly, search engines are prioritizing seach based on free payments from companies and organizations.
  2. Controversial security problems and legal questions of copyright infringement, libel, invasion of privacy, and pornography remain unsolved.
  3. Cyberheckling.
  4. Malicious and irritating practices nag at online users.  The Internet offers many opportunities for spammers to clutter email channels with bogus or dubious offers.
  5. Astroturfing online.

Social media describes the online technologies and practices that people use to share content, opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives, and media itself.

Fake Twitter Accounts… The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

News broke about satirical tweets of BP’s fake public relations stream, @BPGlpobalPR. With more than 20,000 followers at press time, the cynical response to the oil spill is twice as popular than BP’s actual Twitter page, @BP_America.  But should we be following fake twitter accounts?

The Huffington Post, says that we should be following some of the newest twitter dopplegangers.  This post provides the fake twitter pages for Yahoo’s CEO, Carol Bartz, facebook, paramount films, and several others.

Many of these fake twitter accounts openly admit that they are a fake but what about the ones that don’t? Here is a video about fake twitter accounts…

The question of rather to follow fake twitter accounts is up to the individual.  I’m sure that many on twitter realize that God, Satan, and even Osama Bin Laden twitters are not real and simply follow them for pure entertainment.

Twitter has a policy that states they will not take down any fake twitters unless asked to do so by the company/person being imitated request that they do so.

I found this post to be extremely helpful and interesting. Comparing a blog comment length to a mini skirt is a rather effective and entertaining idea.

For people who are wary of allowing comments due to fear of derogatory or rude ones, many blog sites have settings where the creator of the blog must approve comments before they are posted online. I would recommend this before disabling comments altogether because comments let a writer know that people are actually reading their blog.

It truly is amazing how technology has evolved over time. With the internet being one of the primary forms of communication and interaction these days. The growing popularity of marketing and PR on the internet is also very important for college students to realize. I think companies will be looking for prospective employees who are familiar with twitter, blogs, and social networks.
One webpage that I have noticed a major change in is Facebook. Just over the past year so many additions and changes have been made. Users tend to complain about changes initially but once they learn of the benefits, I think most people are thankful for the upgrades.

Facebook announces ‘simplified’ privacy settings

I am a Facebook user and have been for the past five years. Facebook has evolved and changed several times during these years. I think this is due, just as the creator stated, to the growth of users and their expectations. Once a method of communication for college students away from family and friends, Facebook has become a major tool in many companies marketing strategy.

I completely agree with 3rdpartyadvocate, if users do not want to take the time to establish a set of privacy standards for themselves, I do not think the Facebook team should be punished. And as for the national quit Facebook day… I do not foresee Facebook losing many users. Plans for quitting Facebook have been created several times and each have failed.

After reading chapter 4, I also thought it would be more beneficial to start out in a firm. At a firm you are able to work with many different clients, who represent different products while at a department you work with and for one client. I am still undecided as to what area of PR I want to work in, so I hope to start at a firm after graduation… but I too would be happy with any job =)

I recently came across this story, and I was equally offended. I understand that certain companies have to market their product to a specific audience, but I do not believe that fast food restaurants cater to one sex more than another. I would assume that breakfast at Burger King, not only is popular with males but also males who are up early… perhaps working or grabbing breakfast for their children before camp/school? I personally do not eat Burger King but I do know plenty of females who do. The sad thing is I do not think this will have any negative effect on the restaurant. -Amber

Let’s Hear it for the Girls

I still have yet to see SATC2, but I have watched every episode of the TV series and I have seen the first movie. I have always been a big fan of the series and the characters. This is one of the first TV shows I have watched where the lead cast is all females. Every female can relate to at least one of the main characters. I think that Carrie has always been faced with the need to conform by society. Her relationship with “Big” has always been a controversy among viewers. When it comes to the view of women in other cultures, American women are by far extremely lucky. We are given the same opportunities for education as males, and we are no longer expected to stay at home and take care of children. The fact that over 70% of PR professionals are females is also incredible. I am happy to have picked a career where no matter what my gender is I will be able to succeed. -Amber

I was also apart of the new generation MTV now caters to. I remember watching the “Wanna be a VJ” TV show when it first began on TRL. I think it was a great way to get young people involved in the station, and for the most part successful. The new contest to be a “Twitter Jockey”, proves the ever-changing and growing effect social media has on our society. Twitter has become a staple in many young and old professionals lives. After our week of Twitter for class, maybe all of us should enter the contest! – Amber

Humorous Print Ads

Natlye, I always find myself remembering products that feature humor in their advertisements. I always watch the super bowl for the commercials and I always enjoy the funny one’s the most, which more often than not are the beer advertisements. I get extremely annoyed by some commercials whose intention is to use humor and fails too. Even though some of these get stuck in my head including the Brawny Paper Towel commercial that features “Stand by Me”, or the Swiffer commercials with the mop. Finding the right balance of humor and information can be a tough job for companies and those who succeed often reap the most rewards. -Amber

The Usage of “Tweet”

I recently read about this ban through a Tweet (haha). I find it ironic that so many professionals are using Twitter as a primary social network site but are offended by the verb of posting on Twitter. I completely agree that it should be acceptable to use in conversation and on essays about social media. Many companies require that employees know how to use Twitter and other social networks so I don’t understand why it is offensive. Also I agree that sometime in the near future ‘tweet’ will be come as common as ‘email’. But why blame users, blame technology.

I have had an iPhone for two years now and am very impressed with the capabilities of my phone although I am extremely excited for the new version to come out! Some of the features I am most interested in is the iChat camera, I am traveling to Paris next week and will be there for a month. I plan to use Skype to keep in touch with everyone back in the States, but it would be so much more convenient if I could use it through my phone. I had a blackberry before my iPhone and I do miss having the blinking message light which will be another new feature of the iPhone 4. As with every electronic, I think I will wait a few months to see if there are any bugs or glitches with the new phone but I hope to invest in the new version in the near future! -Amber

I found this post to be very informative. It is interesting that George Washington began the first PR department as a pet project, and to see how much it has grown since then. I personally think that starting out in a PR firm would be most beneficial to me because I am still unsure of what type of companies I want to work with. I do however agree that the lack of full-time job offers would be frustrating. I also think that the best part about PR departments is that you are able to learn from people who have been with company longer, and that you are able to begin your career in an intimate setting. –Amber

This post made me so excited! The fact that there are so many women who are making a difference through PR makes me glad I chose a major with so many opportunities for females. I also enjoyed the fact that you localized this post. I am from Augusta, and after living in Statesboro for the past 3 years I am dying to get back to a big city. Atlanta has always been a top contender after graduation, and it is reassuring to know that there are so many PR firms with women as CEOs, founders, and presidents. Eco-Fashion Going Green!

I am also excited that the Fashion industry is following in the footsteps of other industries and becoming eco-friendly. Going green and being green has become such an important part of our generation. It feels good to know that we are doing our part to save the world just from our grocery bags, the buildings we study in, and now finally the clothing we wear. I think it is also important that the news release highlighted the fact that the quality of craftsmanship isn’t going to change. I look forward to seeing the growth of this project. –Amber

BPS Chief Executive Apologized on Facebook

I completely agree with both of you! I think with the growth of Facebook and other social networking sites heads of companies begin to think that there is no use for an on camera apology. I can only hope that the Chief Executive of BP learned his lesson. The oil spill on the Gulf is not a little crises but a problem that is killing our sea life, and affecting many families. Maybe Hayward should remember that all of those people want their life back to. –Amber

Thank you so much for posting this. I too am a senior and will be graduating and entering the job market next spring. I think the best tips you gave were to learn the organization you have applied for, be early, dress appropriately, and lastly to be flexible. I started watching the show HIRED on MTV, and have learned so much through others mistakes, as well as by their accomplishments. I think the best thing for those just entering the job market is to look for a job that interests you because you will most likely be doing it for the next 40-50 years! -Amber

Definition of Public Relations by Rex Harlow, who founded what eventually became the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA):

Public relations is a distinctive management function which helps establish and maintain mutual lines of communication, understanding, acceptance, and cooperation between an organization and its publics; involves the management of problems or issues; helps management keep informed on and responsive to public opinion; defines and emphasizes the responsiblity of management to serve the public interest; helps management keep abreast of and effectively utilize change, serving as an early warning system to help anticipate trends; and uses reseasrch and sound ethical communication techniques as its principal tools.

 

Public Relations as a Process: RACE acronym

  • Reaserch. What is the problem or situation?
  • Action. What is going to be done about it?
  • Communication. How will the public be told?
  • Evaluatoin. Was the audience reached and what was the effect?

Five Essential Abilities of a Public Relations Professional:

  1. Writing skill.  The ability to put information and ideas onto paper clearly and concisely is essential.
  2. Research ability.  Arguments for cuases must have factual support instead of generalities.
  3. Planning expertise.  A public relations program invovles a number of communication tools and activities that must be carefully planned and coordinated.
  4. Problem-solving ability.  Innovative ideas and fresh approaches are needed to solve complex problems or to make a public relations program unique and memorable.
  5. Business/economic competence.
